Mantua is a neighborhood in the
West Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The
neighborhood is affectionately known as “The Bottom” because it’s
situated in the eastern section of West Philadelphia. It
is home to thousands of residents, many of whom resided in the
neighborhood for generations. Some families continue to live
in homes their parents, grandparents or great grandparents
purchased. Today, Mantua is home to many organizations and
citizens working extremely hard to improve the quality of life
within the neighborhood and beyond. The community continues to
grow with recent additions such as, the Mantua Senior home located
on the corner of 34th and Haverford Avenue, the
construction of dozens of new homes on Union Street near Fairmount
Avenue and the implosion of Mantua Hall 18 story housing unit to
make way for new housing on 35th and Fairmount Avenue.
The neighborhood is favorably
located within walking distance or a short drive to many of
Philadelphia’s most famous attractions.
East of Mantua;
The Benjamin Franklin Parkway,
home to many of Philadelphia renowned Museums such as the Art
Museum, Franklin Institute, Boat House Row and more. Walking
time to Benjamin Franklin Parkway 10 minutes.
North of Mantua;
The Philadelphia Zoo is located
just on the other side of the 34th Street Bridge.
Fairmount Park West Philadelphia section is home to the Please Touch
Museum, Mann Music of Performing Arts, Japanese House and Garden,
and more
Walking time for Zoo five
minutes, Fairmount Park fifteen minutes or more.
South of Mantua;
Some of the country’s most
prestigious universities and research establishments are located
south of the neighborhood. Drexel University, University of
Pennsylvania, Science Center, Lincoln University Urban
Campus and 30th Street Station. Walking time
approximately fifteen minutes.
West of Mantua
Shopping area Lancaster Avenue,
is home to a plethora of stores for produce, hardware, art,
furniture, clothing, sporting goods as well as community
organizations.
